Installing fedora on xp

There are several ways to do this. I used Acronis Disk Director to partition my primary drive because I happen to have it installed. I allowed 15GB. If you want to partition in Windows, some free disk partitioning tools that you can use include Partition Logic , and Easus Partition Master Home Edition.

So now with my disk defragmented and partitioned, I inserted the Fedora 10 disk and rebooted. If you boot back into Windows, it means your computer is not configured to boot to the CD drive first. You can change that, this page has some excellent instructions. I selected that the new MB partition should be formatted as a swap drive. I selected to install Web Server so I would have Apache from the get go, but no other additional stuff.

After screens, things scrolling down and blinks and such… success! I set my root password choose something secure!! I had to remember to watch the booting session so I could tell it to boot to Fedora, it only gives you 5 seconds to boot by default, but you can change this if you want. Once it rebooted into Fedora, I then created an account which I will use to logon. Fedora will not let you login as root, for security purposes, but the account you create at this time can switch to root from the Terminal when needed, but you have to remember your root password for that.

My laptop now has WinXP and Fedora 10 running companionably together. You do have to restart to switch from one to the other, which is fine for me. As soon as I logged into Fedora my wireless connection was detected immediately and I was online just like that!

Pretty sweet. Installed by default was the Open Office Suite, photo and audio tools, games, and more. Really excellent. I have access to both Windows and Fedora and that makes me supremely happy. I need to set up the Fedora side of the my world in such a way that I can work almost, if not completely exclusively using Fedora. My grand plan is to migrate myself into Open Source. I want to see if I can live and work independently of Windows and expensive proprietary softwares. I am not married to Fedora and could probably have installed another Distro, but I picked Fedora 10 because I bought the current issue of Linux Format and it was on the DVD… pragmatics and all that.

So the main thing I use my laptop for is school and some of the work I do. Download Share Clip for both systems. On Windows first start Share Clipboard. Then click on Connect and use the IP address of the host system as seen from the guest : Now each copy paste is reflected in both Share Clips!

Reply 12 years ago on Introduction. By the way I'm working on one with OpenSolaris10 on Qemu Instructable updated today for more readability by using the now known formatting options. Great job! By Priya Pedamkar. Fedora is an operating system based on Linux. The latest version, 29, was released on 30 th October with a Kernel version of 4. Let us look into the steps to install Fedora. You are directed to the Home page of Fedora. There are 3 options to choose from, such as:. The workstation installation provides a User-friendly and powerful Operating system on our desktops and laptops. The bare essentials are provided, which is used to deploy the images on the Cloud using Dockers containers.

Download now option copies the Fedora media writer for windows into the local machine. Once we run the file, the complete download of the installation is done, which is around 1. Insert the USB into which the installation is to be copied and select write to disk from the pop-up window. You can install Fedora on a different computer or the same one which you are using, but you should be aware that it will be deleting Windows OS if there is not enough space to partition the drive. In other words, it is always a risk to perform installation this way.

The second option is selected if you wish to test the media and navigate the live environment options. Click on the Install to Hard Drive option to load into installation and create necessary partitions.

Here under Local Standard disks, you can select the Hard drive into which the installation needs to be targeted. If this is done on a machine using an existing OS Windows or Linux , we get a prompt to reclaim the space. Click on Done once all the checks are completed.

Fedora does not provide an auto prompt to reboot. Manual restart needs to be done to install the Fedora completely. First, we land on the Privacy page. These options can be changed from the system settings even at a later stage.
